| | | broad spectrum of geometries typical for tidal channel patterns. This |
| | | is a biogeomorphic feedback that roughly follows Turing\u2019s |
| | | activator-inhibitor principle4,6 and results from flow deflection and |
| | | channel incision around biotically (biofilms, algae, plants) |
| | | stabilized sediment9,15,16,18. Using a mathematical model that is |
| | | supported by field observations, we now show that as the biogeomorphic |
| | | feedback gets stronger, complex multi-scale patterns emerge due to |
| | | self-induced recursion of the scale-dependent feedback, which results |
| | | in nesting of regular channel patterns at successively finer scales. |
| | | This recursive mechanism provides an explanation for earlier |
| | | observations that vegetation increases network complexity19. Our model |
| | | results further demonstrate how biogeomorphic feedback strength does |
| | | not only increase network complexity, but ecosystem functioning as |
| | | well (vegetation density, sediment accretion rate and drainage |
| | | density). Future field research should confirm our study\u2019s |
| | | implications that vegetation-induced self-organization contributes to |
| | | the storm surge buffering capacity20,21 of coastal wetlands and their |
| | | resilience to flooding22 and sea level rise23, and with that for the |
| | | potential of these ecosystems to mitigate the effects of global change |
