complex, multi-scale patterns that characterize many natural systems

can be explained by equally generic mechanisms. As a model system, we

here study the tidal channels that characterize coastal wetlands14, as

these channels constitute patterns that vary greatly in geometry,

ranging from simple parallel channels9,14\u201316 to complexly 

            
98
branching networks1,17, with direct consequences for the functioning 

            
99
and resilience of valuable wetland ecosystems. We reveal that one 

            
100
scale-dependent feedback provides a plausible explanation for the 

            
101
broad spectrum of geometries typical for tidal channel patterns. This 

            
102
is a biogeomorphic feedback that roughly follows Turing\u2019s 

            
103
activator-inhibitor principle4,6 and results from flow deflection and 

            
104
channel incision around biotically (biofilms, algae, plants) 

            
105
stabilized sediment9,15,16,18. Using a mathematical model that is 

            
106
supported by field observations, we now show that as the biogeomorphic 

            
107
feedback gets stronger, complex multi-scale patterns emerge due to 

            
108
self-induced recursion of the scale-dependent feedback, which results 

            
109
in nesting of regular channel patterns at successively finer scales. 

            
110
This recursive mechanism provides an explanation for earlier 

            
111
observations that vegetation increases network complexity19. Our model 

            
112
results further demonstrate how biogeomorphic feedback strength does 

            
113
not only increase network complexity, but ecosystem functioning as 

            
114
well (vegetation density, sediment accretion rate and drainage 

            
115
density). Future field research should confirm our study\u2019s

implications that vegetation-induced self-organization contributes to 

            
117
the storm surge buffering capacity20,21 of coastal wetlands and their

resilience to flooding22 and sea level rise23, and with that for the

potential of these ecosystems to mitigate the effects of global change
